Since 2013, we have been monitoring European green crab using specially designed traps located at 10 different locations in Shediac Bay. From June to September, we take samples to monitor the population dynamics in the bay. The European green crab (Carcinus maenas) is considered an aggressively invasive alien species. This species, which has spread around the globe represents a threat to shellfish and to the ecology of the Shediac Bay. Green crabs are also a threat to vital eelgrass habitat that many migratory birds and fish species rely on.
