Fish population surveys give a good indication of the fish species that exist in the watercourses within our watershed. To carry out these surveys, we use a technique called electrofishing. This technique requires knowledgeable certified operators with specialized equipment that creates a weak electric current in the water. This current stuns the fish for a few seconds, giving us enough time to catch them with a dip net. The captured fish are placed in a bucket of water while they wait to be identified, measured and released. Although electrofishing may seem a little extreme, it is actually harmless to the fish, allowing us to carry out this vital work.
